The Brand feature lets you manage multiple product lines, platforms, or business units within a single design system—while maintaining a unified documentation website. Creating separate design systems, on the other hand, allows for multiple documentation websites and is better suited for larger teams that require independent workflows.
💡 Tip: If your teams require separate governance, different review processes, or unique branding, multiple design systems might be the right choice. If you need to manage variations of the same system, the Brand feature is the better approach.
Yes! Some organizations use a core design system as a foundation, then branch into separate design systems for product-specific needs, while still using brands within each system to manage variations efficiently.
Using Figma variable sync plugin you can mat which modes you wish to put to each of the brands, helping you keep better separation of concerns when documentation and creating code pipelines.
For example, let’s say you use modes as breaking points for your system in your web variables library, and then you have a collection for your IOS variables.

We are going to continue to invest on the code automation side of the house, so let us know if there is anything else you’d like to see or do.
Roles are not agnostic per user. You can assign users different access roles.
Eg. A user can have admin access over one space (“design system”), contributor access to another, and view access to a third.
Additionally, you can create as many sections (“design systems”) within Supernova to mimic how teams operate at your company and set up a governance model that makes sense for your company.
Note multiple design systems and granular permissions are only available on our Enterprise plans.
